Notable Interments

Throughout its long history Melbourne General Cemetery has become the final resting place for some of Australia’s most notable identities. Personalities from all walks of life, including early pioneers and politicians through to famous sporting identities, rest within the cemetery’s grounds.

  • Sir Robert Gordon Menzies – Former Prime Minister of Australia
  • James Henry Scullin – Former Prime Minister of Australia
  • Sir John Grey Gorton – Former Prime Minister of Australia
  • Peter Fintan Lalor – Eureka Stockade leader and politician
  • Walter Albert Lindrum OBE – Billiards champion
  • Sir Redmond Barry – Judge and Victoria’s first Solicitor-General
  • John Pascoe Fawkner – Politician
  • Robert O’Hara Burke & William John Wills – Ill-fated explorers

There is also a symbolic memorial to Prime Minister Harold Holt.

Under legislative process, on 1 March 2010 The Cheltenham & Regional Cemeteries Trust and The Trustees of the Necropolis Springvale were merged to create the Southern Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust.  Melbourne General Cemetery is now one of the sites administered by that Trust.
